Instructions

Bag Base: Round 1

  1. Start by chaining 42 (40 chains + 2 for turning).

  2. In the 3rd chain from the hook, work 2 hdc.

  3. Make 2 hdc in the next chain. Place a stitch marker in the last of the four hdc stitches worked.

  4. Hdc in each of the next 36 chains. You’ll have two chains left.

  5. Make 2 hdc in each of the last two chains, then turn your work to crochet along the back of the foundation chain.

  6. Repeat the same pattern: 2 hdc in each of the first two backside chains. Place a stitch marker in the last hdc made.

  7. Hdc in the next 36 backside chains.

  8. Finish with 2 hdc in each of the final two chains. Add a stitch marker to the first of the four hdc just made.

  9. Join the round with a slip stitch to the first hdc. You should now have 88 stitches.

  • Stitch counts: 36 between each marker, and 8 at each rounded end (including the marked stitch).

Rounds 2–4 (Bag Bottom)

Each round increases slightly to shape the base:

Round 2:

  • Chain 2.

  • Work 2 hdc in each of the first 2 stitches. Move your stitch marker to the last hdc of the 4.

  • Hdc across next 40 stitches.

  • Repeat increases at both rounded ends and hdc across the long sides.

  • Join with slip stitch. Total stitches: 96.

Round 3:

  • Same structure as above.

  • Hdc across next 44 stitches (between rounded ends).

  • Total stitches: 104.

Round 4:

  • Hdc across next 48 stitches.

  • Total stitches: 112.

Bag Body

Round 1 (Top Section):

  • Chain 2, hdc in the back loop only of each stitch.

  • Join with a slip stitch. Stitch count remains 112.

Rounds 2–26:

  • Continue with regular hdc in each stitch.

  • Join each round with a slip stitch.

Round 27:

  • Chain 1, sc in each stitch.

  • Join with slip stitch. Final stitch count: 112.

Handles (Make Two)

  1. Start with a chain of 7 (5 + 2 for turning).

  2. Row 1: Begin in the 3rd chain from the hook, hdc across [5 stitches total].

  3. Rows 2–46: Chain 2, hdc across, and turn after each row.

    • Your handle should measure approx. 18 inches.

  4. Measure 1 inch in from each end and mark with stitch markers.

  5. Fold the strap in half and single crochet the folded ends together between the markers to form a tube.

  6. Measure 4.5 inches in from each side of the bag opening (front and back), and mark.

  7. Align the handles so there’s 9.5 inches between markers. Sew them securely to the inside of the bag using a tapestry needle.
