Lotus Flower Granny Square Pattern

Inspiration for crochet squares can come from just about anywhere. You might spot something intriguing on social media, or find yourself captivated by nature’s own designs, like the swirling pattern of a sand dollar on the beach. The square I’m sharing today, the Lotus Flower Granny Square, is one such design that blends traditional motifs with a touch of travel-inspired flair.

The starting point for this pattern was a Spanish tile with stunning blue and green hues. But I wanted to take it a little further—give it more of a floral twist, while capturing the spirit of Moroccan design. Think detailed petals, rich jewel tones, and a touch of ornate charm.

Originally, I designed this square using deep, moody shades. Since then, I’ve also played around with a few alternative colour palettes—one soft and springlike, and another with a distinctly festive feel, reminiscent of Poinsettias, the classic Christmas flower.

What You’ll Need to Make the Lotus Flower Granny Square

  • A 4mm (G / US size 6) crochet hook

  • A yarn needle for weaving in ends

  • Five colours of DK (light worsted) yarn – I used Nurturing Fibres 100% Cotton, but Paintbox Yarns Cotton DK is also a good substitute. You’ll need less than half a ball of each colour.

Here’s the colourway I used:

  • Maroon – Nurturing Fibres: Persian

  • Turquoise – Nurturing Fibres: Aventurine

  • Yellow – Nurturing Fibres: Sunglow

  • Navy – Nurturing Fibres: Charcoal

  • Cream – Nurturing Fibres: Cream

Notes Before You Start

This pattern is ideal for confident beginners or intermediate crocheters.
It is worked in joined rounds (not continuously), so be sure to follow instructions for slip stitches at the end of each round.
Finished size is approximately 16 cm square when blocked.

Special Stitches Used

  • 4 Double Crochet Bobble: Yarn over, insert hook, yarn over, pull up a loop, yarn over, pull through 2 loops. Repeat this three more times (you should have 5 loops on the hook). Yarn over and pull through all loops. Chain 1 to secure.

  • Front Post Bobble (FP-Bobble): Like the bobble above, but worked around the front post of a stitch rather than into its top. Use the same method, but insert your hook around the post instead.

  • Small Picot: Chain 2, then slip stitch into the second chain from the hook.

  • Medium Picot: Chain 3, then slip stitch into the third chain from the hook.
