Feather & Fan Blanket

Welcome to Crochet Made Easy!

Hello, dear reader! We’re thrilled to have you here at Crochet Made Easy, your go-to blog for beautiful and accessible crochet patterns. Today, we’re excited to introduce a timeless and elegant design: the Feather & Fan Blanket.

Why the Feather & Fan Blanket Stands Out

Few patterns blend tradition and creativity as seamlessly as the Feather & Fan Blanket. With its signature flowing waves and delicate texture, this design is both sophisticated and easy to customise. Whether you’re making a cosy throw, a stylish wrap, or even decorative pillow covers, this pattern offers endless possibilities.

The Feather & Fan pattern is admired for its graceful, undulating design, resembling feathers or delicate leaves. Its versatility allows you to experiment with colours and textures, making each project unique. Plus, it’s simple enough for beginners while still providing an engaging challenge for experienced crocheters.

What You’ll Need

To get started, gather these materials:

  • Crochet Hook: 3.5mm (E)

  • Yarn: 4-ply (fingering) yarn in six colours, totaling 1,200 metres (1,312 yards)

    • Main Colour (MC): 400 metres (437 yards)

    • Five Contrasting Colours (CC1–CC5): 80 metres (87 yards) each

Crochet Abbreviations (US Terms)

To make following the pattern easier, here are the abbreviations used:

  • beg – beginning

  • ch – chain

  • dc – double crochet

  • sc – single crochet

  • sk – skip

  • sl st – slip stitch

  • st(s) – stitch(es)

  • yo – yarn over

Getting Started

This pattern follows a 19-stitch repeat, meaning you can adjust the size of your project by adding or removing sets of 19 stitches.

If you’re making a swatch to test your gauge, chain 57 stitches plus an additional 3 chains to begin.

For a full-sized blanket, start with 209 chains (or adjust according to the table provided in the pattern PDF).

Colour Pattern

You’ll be alternating between the main colour (MC) and five contrasting colours (CC1–CC5) in the following order:

  1. CC1

  2. CC2

  3. MC

  4. CC3

  5. CC4

  6. MC

  7. CC5

  8. CC1

  9. MC

Repeat this sequence throughout your project.

Pattern Instructions

Row 1: Foundation Row

  1. Chain 3 (this counts as your first double crochet).

  2. Work into the back ridge of the chain:

    • Make 2 dc in the 4th chain from your hook.

    • Make 3 dc in the next chain.

    • Skip 1 chain, then 1 dc in the next chain, repeating 7 times.

    • Skip 1 chain, then 3 dc in the next chain, repeating 4 times.

    • Repeat this pattern 10 times across the row.

    • End with 3 dc in the last chain.

Changing Colours

When changing colours at the end of a row:

  1. Yarn over, insert the hook into the stitch, and pull up a loop.

  2. Yarn over and pull through two loops.

  3. Before completing the last stitch, switch to the new colour by pulling it through the final two loops.

  4. Cut the old yarn, leaving a small tail to weave in later.

Row 2 and Beyond

  1. Chain 3 (counts as the first dc).

  2. Make 2 dc in the same stitch.

  3. Skip 1 stitch, then 1 dc in the next stitch, repeating 7 times.

  4. Skip 1 stitch, then 3 dc in the next stitch, repeating 4 times.

  5. Repeat this pattern across the row.

  6. Continue this pattern for 65 rows in total, or adjust as needed.

Adding the Border

Once your blanket reaches the desired size, add a simple single crochet border using the main colour:

  1. Hold the tail end of the yarn at the back of your work.

  2. Insert your hook into the first stitch, pull up a loop, and chain 1.

  3. Make 1 single crochet in each stitch across the edges.

  4. Fasten off and weave in the ends.

Finishing Touches

To give your blanket a polished look:

  • Wash it gently in lukewarm water with mild detergent.

  • Lay it flat to dry to maintain its shape and texture.
