Whether you’re a seasoned crocheter or just picking up a hook for the first time, this pattern offers the perfect blend of simplicity and elegance. Let’s explore the soothing rhythm of ripples and create a cozy blanket that will warm both hearts and homes.

Why Choose the Ripple Pattern?

The ripple (or chevron) pattern is a classic for good reason. Its wave-like design creates visual interest and a delightful texture, making it a standout choice for afghans. The Easy Ripple Afghan is ideal for crocheters of all levels — it’s simple enough for beginners, yet satisfying for experienced crafters looking for a relaxing project. Best of all, it’s highly customizable in size and color, allowing your personal style to shine through.

Materials You’ll Need:

Yarn:

  • Worsted weight acrylic yarn in three colors

    • About 12 ounces per color (36 oz total) for a 40″ x 60″ afghan

    • If using variegated yarn, about 10 skeins (3 oz each) for the same size

  • Sport or baby sport yarn

    • About 21 ounces will make a 42″ x 39″ afghan

Crochet Hook:

  • Size I (5.5 mm) for worsted weight yarn

  • Size G (4 mm) for sport/baby weight yarn

  • Adjust your hook size based on your personal tension (tight/loose)

Stitch Abbreviations & Techniques:

  • ch – chain

  • dc – double crochet

  • yo – yarn over

  • 3 st dec – 3 stitch decrease (dc3tog):
[yo, insert hook in next st, yo, pull through st, yo, pull through 2 loops] repeat 3 times, then yo and pull through all 4 loops on hook

  • 2 st dec – 2 stitch decrease (dc2tog):
[yo, insert hook in next st, yo, pull through st, yo, pull through 2 loops] repeat once, then yo and pull through all 3 loops on hook

Pattern Instructions:

Foundation Chain:
Start by chaining a multiple of 16, plus 2 extra stitches.

  • For a 40″ wide afghan (worsted weight): chain 130

  • For a 55″ wide afghan (worsted weight): chain 178

  • For a 41″ wide afghan (sport weight): chain 178

Row 1:

  • Dc in 3rd ch from hook

  • Dc in next 6 ch

  • 3 dc in next ch

  • Dc in next 6 ch

  • Work 3 st dec over next 3 ch, dc in next 6 ch, 3 dc in next ch, dc in next 6 ch – repeat from * to * across

  • End with 2 st dec over last 2 ch

  • Ch 2, turn
Tip: The “valleys” may look a bit shallow at first. After a few rows, they’ll begin to even out.

Row 2 (Repeat Row):

  • Skip first dc

  • Dc in next 7 dc

  • 3 dc in next dc

  • Dc in next 6 dc

  • 3 st dec over next 3 dc, dc in next 6 dc, 3 dc in next dc, dc in next 6 dc – repeat from * to *

  • End with 2 st dec

  • Ch 2, turn

Repeat Row 2 until the afghan reaches your desired length.

Changing Colors:

To switch colors neatly:

  • At the end of a row, during the final 2 st dec, stop when 3 loops remain on your hook.

  • Yarn over with your new color and pull through all 3 loops.

  • Ch 2 and turn to continue with the new color.

Optional: Change colors every 2 rows for a striped effect.

Finishing Touches:

  • Leave 5–6″ tails when changing yarn colors

  • Use a yarn needle to weave in all ends securely

  • Add a border if you like! A single crochet or shell stitch edging makes a lovely finishing touch
