Hello, dear reader! A warm welcome to our blog, Crochet Made Easy. We’re always thrilled to bring you fresh updates from the world of crochet and all things handmade! Today, we have something truly special for you—a unique and stylish crochet pattern for espadrilles.

Espadrilles are a timeless and versatile footwear choice, effortlessly complementing different outfits across various seasons. Traditionally crafted with rope soles, they are beloved for their comfort and simplicity. Now, with the magic of crochet, you can create your very own personalised version, making this classic footwear even more exclusive.

In this article, we’ll explore why crocheted espadrilles are a fantastic addition to your wardrobe, the materials and techniques required, and how you can customise them to suit your style. Let’s get started!

Why Choose Crocheted Espadrilles?

Crocheted espadrilles strike the perfect balance between comfort and fashion. They are completely customisable—you can choose your preferred colours, yarn types, and design details. Made with breathable materials like cotton or linen, they’re ideal for warm weather, helping to keep your feet cool and comfortable.

Another great reason to try this pattern is sustainability. By crafting your own footwear, you can opt for eco-friendly materials, reducing your reliance on mass-produced goods. Not only does this allow for a unique and personal touch, but it also contributes to a more environmentally conscious lifestyle.

Materials and Techniques

To create crocheted espadrilles, you’ll need the following materials:

✔️ Yarn: Cotton, linen, or any lightweight, breathable fibre
✔️ Crochet hook: A size that complements your chosen yarn
✔️ Soles: Ready-made espadrille soles or a jute base for durability
✔️ Tapestry needle: For sewing the crochet pieces together

As for techniques, this project primarily uses basic crochet stitches such as single crochet and double crochet, with increases and decreases to shape the shoe for a perfect fit. Depending on the pattern, you might also add decorative elements like picot edges or fringes for extra flair.

How to Personalise Your Crocheted Espadrilles

One of the best things about handmade crochet pieces is the ability to make them truly your own. Here are some fun ways to customise your espadrilles:

Embellishments – Add bows, pompoms, or even delicate embroidery for a unique touch.
🎨 Colour Play – Experiment with different yarn shades or mix textures for a striking visual effect.
🌟 Sophisticated Shine – Incorporate metallic threads or subtle sparkle for a chic, elegant look.
👣 Sole Selection – Opt for lightweight soles for a delicate finish or sturdier ones for durability and outdoor wear.

The Joy of Making Your Own Espadrilles

Creating your own crochet espadrilles is more than just a craft project—it’s a rewarding experience. It allows you to express creativity, hone new crochet techniques, and even make thoughtful, personalised gifts for loved ones. Plus, the sense of accomplishment that comes with wearing something handmade is truly special!

Pattern Details & Instructions

✔️ Size: Women’s shoe size 8-9
✔️ Adjustments: The front foot flap remains the same for all sizes. For smaller sizes, reduce the number of rows on the side piece; for larger sizes, add extra rows.

Materials Required:

  • 100g Schachenmayr Catania yarn in leaf green (#00389)
  • US D-3 (3 mm) Milward crochet hook
  • Yarn needle
  • 1 pair of PRYM espadrille soles (size 8-9, Art. 975103)

Fancy Pattern:

  • Follow Chart 1 and complete rows 1-12 once.
  • After finishing row 12, work rows 13 and 14 along the straight edge of the foundation chain.

Eyelet Pattern:

  • Follow Chart 2.
  • Repeat rows 1 and 2, ensuring you finish on a row 2.

📌 Tip: Crochet tightly for a firm fabric. The side pieces should fit snugly on the sole without extending beyond its length.

Gauge:

✔️ 28 stitches and 14.5 rows = 4 x 4 inches (10 x 10 cm)

Step-by-Step Instructions

Flap:

1️⃣ Chain 15 stitches and follow Chart 1.
2️⃣ After completing row 12, cut the yarn and secure it.
3️⃣ For rows 13 and 14, work along the edge of the chain (indicated in grey on the chart).

💡 Adjustment Tip: If the flap needs to be narrower, use slip stitches. If it needs to be wider, use single crochet stitches.

Heel and Side Pieces:

1️⃣ Start the same way as the flap, following rows 1-4 of the grey section in Chart 2.
2️⃣ For the left side, work over the first 14 stitches and follow row 1 of Chart 2.
3️⃣ Continue repeating rows 1 and 2 until reaching 18 rows in total. Adjust as needed for different sizes.
4️⃣ Create the other side piece in the same way.
5️⃣ Along the top edges of both side pieces and the heel, add 1 row of single crochet followed by 1 row of picot stitches (2 single crochet stitches, then chain 3, slip stitch into the first chain).

Finishing Touches:

✅ Attach the narrow edge of the side piece to the straight edge of the flap, ensuring the picot edge is at the front.
✅ Sew the crochet piece to the sole using buttonhole stitches (see the diagram in the PDF).
✅ Adjust the size by sewing it directly to the edge or slightly above the sole for a snug fit.
