Crochet Basket Bag Pattern

Hello, dear reader! Welcome back to Crochet Made Easy, our cosy little space where we celebrate the beauty of crochet. Today, I’m excited to share with you a stunning crochet basket bag pattern. This design is not only elegant but also incredibly practical.

I first made one to store my dog’s toys—absolutely perfect! Then, I crocheted another for a picnic with the kids, and it was just as ideal. Whether for storage, shopping, or outings, this basket bag is a must-have.

A Timeless and Versatile Piece

Few crochet creations are as classic and multi-purpose as the Simple Crochet Basket Bag. It seamlessly blends the art of crochet with the functionality of a traditional basket, resulting in a stylish and practical accessory. Loved by both craft enthusiasts and fashion lovers, this bag is a delightful project to create and use.

A Perfect Gift Idea

Looking for a thoughtful, handmade gift? This basket bag is a fantastic choice! With its countless uses, anyone would be delighted to have one.

Elegant Design with a Minimalist Touch

One of the most appealing aspects of this Simple Basket Bag is its clean, modern design. Made with basic stitches like single crochet and double crochet, it has a timeless charm. You can customise it by using different yarn colours and textures, making each piece uniquely yours.

Style Meets Practicality

Despite its delicate appearance, this bag is highly functional. The open-weave design allows good ventilation, making it ideal for shopping, picnics, or even a beach trip. Its sturdy structure ensures it holds essentials securely while maintaining a chic look.

Endless Possibilities for Customisation

Beyond its aesthetic appeal, this basket bag offers limitless creative opportunities. You can choose different yarn types, experiment with colours, or embellish it with tassels, pompoms, or beads. Each bag becomes a reflection of the maker’s personal style.

This project also lets you adjust the height according to your needs. Made with simple circular stitches, it’s a great way to use up extra yarn while adding a personal touch to your home decor.

Materials You’ll Need:

  • Crochet Hook: US I9/5.5mm (or size needed to match gauge)
  • Yarn: Medium weight – 1 oz (approximately 45 yards)
  • Tapestry Needle

Gauge:

To ensure the correct size, crochet a 14 half-double crochet (hdc) stitches by 12 rows swatch—this should measure 4×4 inches.

Adjusting the Size:

  • Want a taller bag? Continue past Round 11 until you reach your desired height.
  • Prefer a shorter bag? Stop at Round 11 once it meets your preference.

Now, let’s begin!

Stitch Abbreviations (US Terms):

  • bl – Back Loop
  • ch – Chain
  • fl – Front Loop
  • hdc – Half Double Crochet
  • sc – Single Crochet
  • sl st – Slip Stitch
  • st – Stitch

Special Techniques:

  • Back Loop Crochet: Insert your hook only into the back loop of each stitch instead of both loops—this creates a unique texture.
  • Front Loop Crochet: Insert the hook only into the front loop of each stitch, adding another dimension to the pattern.

Pattern Notes:

When you see instructions like [2 sc in next st, sc in next st] 6 times, it means you should:

  1. Do 2 single crochets in the next stitch.
  2. Do 1 single crochet in the following stitch.
  3. Repeat this sequence six times in total.

Now, let’s get started!
