Crochet Blanket Pattern Instructions

Finished Measurements:

  • Size: This blanket measures 47 inches wide by 61¾ inches long when finished.

Gauge:

  • Rounds 1–4 should form a 4-inch square.
  • A completed block will be 13 inches square.

Important Notes:

  • Make sure to weave in all loose ends as you go along.
  • Unless mentioned otherwise, join rounds with a slip stitch.
  • At the start of a round, a chain-3 counts as the first double crochet unless stated differently.

Special Stitches:

  • Beginning Shell (beg shell): Chain 3, then work 2 double crochets in the indicated stitch or space.
  • Shell: Work 3 double crochets in the specified stitch or space.
  • Corner Shell: Work 3 double crochets, chain 2, then 3 more double crochets in the same stitch or space.

Color Sequence:

The color sequence is key to adding charm to your blanket. Follow the suggested sequence for each square to create a cohesive, vibrant design.

Creating the Small Squares:

Round 1:

  1. Using your first color, chain 4 and join with a slip stitch to form a ring.
  2. Work a beginning shell into the ring, chain 2, then repeat (shell, chain 2) three more times in the ring.
  3. Join with a slip stitch to the third chain of your starting chain-3.
  4. Fasten off if switching to another color.
    • At this point you will have 4 shells and 4 chain-2 spaces.

Round 2:

  1. If changing colors, join your new color in any chain-2 space, or slip stitch into a chain-2 space with your working color.
  2. Into this space, work (beginning shell, chain 2, shell). Then chain 1.
  3. Repeat (corner shell, chain 1) in each of the remaining chain-2 spaces.
  4. Join with a slip stitch to the top of your beginning chain-3.
  5. Fasten off if switching colors.
    • Layout now includes 4 corner shells and 4 chain-1 spaces.

Round 3:

  1. With your new or current yarn, slip stitch into a chain-2 space (or join the next color if needed).
  2. Work (beginning shell, chain 2, shell) into that space, chain 1.
  3. Into the next chain-1 space, work a shell, then chain 1.
  4. Continue the following sequence around the block: (corner shell in chain-2 space, chain 1, shell in chain-1 space, chain 1).
  5. Join to the beginning chain-3 and fasten off as needed.
    • Your block now has 4 corner shells, 4 regular shells, and 8 chain-1 spaces.

Round 4:

  1. Slip stitch into the next chain-2 space, or join your next color there.
  2. Begin with (shell, chain 2, shell) in the same chain-2 space, then chain 1.
  3. Work shell, chain 1 in each chain-1 space until you reach the next corner.
  4. At the corner, repeat corner shell in the chain-2 space, chain 1.
  5. Keep this pattern going around the block. Finish the round by joining with a slip stitch at the top of the starting chain-3.
    • Final count for this round is 4 corner shells, 8 shells, and 12 chain-1 spaces.

Block Edging

Block Edging:

  1. Work a round of edging for each Small Square, following the desired color sequence.
  2. Use 1 round per color. Refer back to the stitch instructions for guidance.

Assembling Small Squares:

  • Arrange your completed Small Squares based on the provided Placement Diagram.
  • Place the squares right side up. Then, use the whipstitch technique to join their edges, making seamless connections.

Large Square Instructions:

  • For the larger squares, begin Rounds 1–4 as outlined in the Small Square pattern.
  • Continue by repeating Round 4 evenly to expand the size of the square. Keep going until the square has 13 rounds total.
    • At the end, you’ll have 4 corner shells, 44 shells, and 48 chain-1 spaces.

Make a total of 2 Large Squares, and follow the color sequence guide for a balanced design.

Blanket Assembly:

  • Arrange all 12 blocks (including Large and Small Squares) according to the Placement Diagram.
  • Place the right sides facing up and use the whipstitch method to connect the blocks into a blanket.

Blanket Edging:

  1. Round 1:

    • Attach pale green yarn to any corner chain-2 space.
    • Work (beginning shell, chain 2, shell) into the same corner space, chain 1.
    • Continue around the edge, working (shell, chain 1) in each chain-1 space. When you reach block seams, use double crochet decreases at the joints to keep the edging neat.
    • Finish the round by slip stitching to the starting chain-3. Fasten off.
  2. Round 2:

    • Join dark green yarn at any corner chain-2 space.
    • Repeat the same process as in Round 1, ensuring shells are evenly spaced along the edges.
    • Join and fasten off.

  1. Rounds 3–7:

    • Alternate colors for the remaining rounds using the same technique. Suggested colors are off-white for Rounds 4–5 and red for Rounds 6–7.
