Beginner Knit Baby Booties – A No-Fuss Pattern
Looking for a first knitting project that’s cute and practical? These baby booties tick both boxes. They’re knitted flat, use only the knit stitch, and require minimal shaping—making them ideal for beginners. Plus, they knit up quickly, so you’ll have a pair ready in no time.
What You’ll Need
-
Yarn: Around 50 yards of soft DK weight yarn – baby-friendly yarns like cotton blends or acrylics work well
-
Needles: US size 6 (4.0 mm) straight needles
-
Tapestry needle: For seaming and weaving in ends
-
Gauge: Not too critical, but roughly 20 stitches = 4 inches in garter stitch works well
Finished Size
-
Newborn – Approximately 3 inches (7.5 cm) in sole length
-
Want a different size? Use thicker yarn and bigger needles for a larger pair, or finer yarn and smaller needles to size down.
Abbreviations
-
k – knit
-
k2tog – knit two stitches together
Pattern Notes
-
The booties are knitted flat, in one piece, and then seamed.
-
Garter stitch (knit every row) is used throughout – super simple.
-
No complicated shaping – just a few decreases and you’re done.
Let’s Knit!
1. Start with the Sole
-
Cast on 34 stitches.
-
Knit every row for 14 rows (this forms the base of the bootie).
2. Shape the Toe
-
Row 15: k2tog, then knit to the end.
-
Row 16: k2tog, knit to the end again.
-
Row 17: Cast off 3 stitches, knit across.
-
Row 18: Cast off 3 stitches, knit to the end.
-
You should now have 26 stitches on your needle.
3. Knit the Upper
-
Knit every row for the next 20 rows.
-
This section wraps around the baby’s foot and ankle.
4. Finishing Off
-
Cast off all stitches. Leave a long tail (about 12 inches) – you’ll use this for sewing the bootie together.
Assembly
-
Fold the piece in half lengthwise. The cast-off toe edge should meet the cast-on edge.
-
Using your yarn tail and a tapestry needle, seam the bottom (sole) and then up the back of the bootie.
-
A mattress stitch looks neat, but a simple whipstitch or running stitch will do the job nicely.
-
-
Weave in any loose ends on the inside of the bootie.
-
Turn the whole thing right side out, and admire your work!
