Hello, dear readers!
I hope you’re all doing well. Today, we’re diving into the wonderful world of crochet, a timeless craft that allows us to create beautiful and functional pieces using just yarn and a hook. In this article, I want to share one of my favorite patterns with you—the Ripple Afghan blanket. I hope you enjoy this pattern recommendation!
The Charm of the Ripple Afghan
Also known as the wave or chevron afghan, the ripple afghan has been a cherished design for generations. Although its exact origins remain uncertain, this pattern became particularly popular in the mid-20th century. Its distinctive waves and ripples create a visually appealing texture, making it both a functional and decorative piece.
One of the best things about the ripple afghan is its versatility. It can be made in various sizes and color combinations, making it an excellent project for both beginners and seasoned crocheters. The pattern is simple to learn, and with a bit of patience and practice, even beginners can create a stunning blanket.

- Crochet Hook: The hook size should match the yarn weight you’re using. Most patterns will specify the recommended hook size.

- Dc in the next 6 chains.
- Work 3 dc in the next chain (this forms a peak).
- Dc in the next 6 chains.
- Work a 3 st dec over the next 3 chains (this forms a valley).
- Dc in the next 6 chains.
- Work 3 dc in the next chain.
- Repeat steps 4–7 across the row.
- Finish the row with a 2 st dec in the last 2 chains.
- Chain 2 and turn your work.
Note: At this stage, the valleys may appear shallower than the peaks. Continue for another row or two to balance the shape.
Row 2:
- Skip the first stitch.
- Dc in the next 7 stitches.
- Work 3 dc in the next stitch.
- Dc in the next 6 stitches.

- Work 3 dc in the next stitch.
- Repeat steps 4–7 across the row.
- Finish the row with a 2 st dec in the last 2 stitches.
- Chain 2 and turn.
Repeat Row 2 until your afghan reaches the desired length. If using multiple colors, consider changing colors every 2 rows for a vibrant effect.
How to Change Colors
- At the end of a row, when working the 2 st dec, stop when you have the last 3 loops on your hook.
- Yarn over with the new color and pull through the 3 loops.
- Chain 2 and turn.
- Leave a 5–6 inch yarn tail to weave in later.
Finishing Touches
- Securely weave in all loose yarn ends with a yarn needle.
- Gently block your finished afghan to help even out the waves and enhance the stitch definition.
